When I first listened to the new self-produced album by Seattle band, The Safety Skirts, I had two competing impulses. Should I plug my ears first or run hand over mouth into the nearest bathroom?

These self-professed purveyors of "geeky girl rawk" neither rocked or rolled this reviewer. Spouting songs about neighborhood feuds, Elvis and proms that end in death, The Safety Skirts travel well-worn lyrical territory. And I'd like to discuss their musical ability…but they didn't have any.

Willing to give them a second chance, I went to see them perform at Seattle's newest club sensation, the Puffy Cat.

From their first out-of-tune rock chord to the last, the group trodded through one song after another, each indistinguishable from the last. Their sloppy playing was only eclipsed by the not-good-enough-for karaoke vocals of lead singer, Michele.

As their 15-minute set came to a close, they played what they called their "future one-hit wonder" My Mom Says I'm Special, and it was clear by their dismal music and tragic stage presence that their mothers will be the only ones telling them they're special. This reviewer gives them one star and that's only because the band logo was cute.

The band was so touched by this letter sent by a fan, they wanted to reproduce it here:

Dear "Skirts",

I've never written a fan letter before, but I just had to tell you how much I love you and your music.

I think the thing that I like about you is that you're unpopular. I mean, anyone could like The Beatles or Nirvana, but I always seem to like people who don't sell any albums or go on tour or have roadies or make any money whatsoever on their music. That's indie, so it's cool.

I also like that you are geeky. Geeky seems to be really "in" right now, but I can tell that you guys aren't just being trendy. You really ARE nerdy and socially inept, especially when it comes to the opposite sex. It's just a guess, but you don't seem like you date a lot. You must not to have all that free time to write your songs. I think dating is stupid, too. In fact, I've never even been on a date.

But the thing that I admire the most about you is how you don't conform to society's fascination with being thin. Michele, you are really brave to do what you do. I, too, am morbidly obese and I can't imagine all 400 pounds of me up on a stage for all to see. All those eyes watching your huge arms swing and sway and your tree-trunk legs move to the rhythms of your kick-butt songs.

You guys rock!

Debbie Norris
